If you are heading to Australia, don’t forget to sort out your Health Insurance before you head off to explore everything our great country has to offer – vast open lands, beautiful blue oceans, sparkling white sand, kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles, snakes and sharks!!
Overseas visitors who arrive here on holiday, extended visits, applying for permanent residency, who do not qualify for an Australian Medicare card will need to apply for Visitors to Australia health insurance to make sure they are covered for medical and hospital expenses incurred during their stay. If you are applying for a Visa Subclass 457 or Visa Subclass 485, you are required to have a minimum level of health insurance and to maintain it for the duration of your stay in Australia.
Students in Australia, who hold a temporary student visa, may be required as a visa condition to take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). While most likely to receive immediate necessary medical treatment in the Australian public health system, students aren’t entitled to any other health benefits and should consider Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) also.
Migrants with permanent residency or applying for permanent residency are generally eligible to join Medicare but should also consider OVHC.
