457 VISA APPLICANTS
Applicants for Visa Subclass 457 you will be required to have a minimum level of health insurance prior to the grant of the visa. You will need to maintain this insurance for yourself, and your family if they are joining you on the same visa, for the duration of your stay in Australia.
You will be required to provide Immigration proof from your health insurer to verify you have met this visa requirement.
If your visa status or Medicare eligibility changes at any time, inform your insurer as soon as possible to find out whether your level of cover is still suitable.
Exemptions:
You can apply to Immigration for an exemption from the 457 health insurance visa requirements if you are covered by a reciprocal health care agreement and you have enrolled in Medicare, the Australian public health care system.
485 VISA APPLICANTS
If you are applying for a 485 visa, you are required to hold adequate health insurance in Australia covering the time you lodge your application to when a decision is made on the application and continuity of cover for the duration you hold a 485 visa.
Once a 485-compliant policy is purchased, a confirmation letter will be issued stating the policy meets 485 visa requirements. You must submit evidence of your health insurance to Immigration at the time you lodge your visa application.
If applying for a 485 visa from outside Australia, you will be required to provide documentation that you have a health insurance policy at the time you lodge your application. The insurance policy may commence on the date of arrival.
